There is no sugary ketchup on the ingredient list. Instead, we start with a can of crushed tomatoes and we break that down using honey and apple cider vinegar to produce a rich, complex tomato sauce as a base.
Did I mention how easy this sauce is to make? It takes less than 10 minutes of prep time.
Put the lid on and walk away for an hour. Come back, take the lid off, and walk away for another hour. Blend. And…you’re done!
Five ways to use this BBQ sauce:

5. As a pizza sauce.
Check out the recipe below.
Sweet and Spicy BBQ Sauce with Honey and Chipotle
2 tbsp olive oil
1 cup of minced onion (about 1 medium onion)
2 tbsp minced garlic (about 3 large cloves)
1-28 oz can crushed tomatoes
2/3 cup honey
1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp chili powder
1/2 tsp chipotle powder
1/4 tsp ground black pepper
1/8 tsp ground coriander seed
1/8 tsp ground cumin seed
In a large pot, over medium heat, heat olive oil. Add onion and garlic, stirring frequently and cooking until golden and fragrant, about 7 to 8 minutes.
Add all remaining ingredients. Bring to boil. Reduce and simmer on low heat, covered, for 1 hour.
Stir. Continue simmering, uncovered, for 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
Blend with an immersion blender until smooth and thick. Alternatively, use a blender. Transfer to large jar.
Keeps for several months.
NOTES: If you don’t have a can of crushed tomatoes, you can use a can of diced tomatoes and blend it for 10 seconds or so until it is smooth.
