Let me tell you a story about a fridge I once saw. You’ll find it below.
This particular fridge made me think about just which ingredients I absolutely need to have and which ones I can live without.
What about you?
Which ingredients are absolute must-haves for you?
I make myself rich by making my wants few. Henry David Thoreau
Have you ever found yourself staring at an overflowing refrigerator, dismayed that there is nothing to eat?
I have. The fridge I’m thinking of was full. Chock-full. Bursting at the seams full. And yet- there was nothing to eat. It was full of….condiments. I kid you not. There were dozens of flavours of jams. Multiple mustards, each more exotic than the next. There was a sizeable sampling of hot sauces. Spreads. Jellies. Syrups. Expensive little jars of this. Overpriced little jars of that. And absolutely no “real” food to speak of. There was nothing to make a meal out of!
I’m not trying to give condiments a hard time. I love jam and exotic mustard too. But what struck me was that the owner of this particular refrigerator was so busy acquiring new delicacies that they failed to enjoy what they already had.
Simple ingredients. It continues to amaze me how so much can be made by so few ingredients.
Here are the essential ingredients in my kitchen that I have on hand:
- vegetables and fruits
- meat and fish
- oils & vinegars
- nuts and seeds
- dried herbs and spices
- fresh herbs
- honey and maple syrup
- coconut oil, coconut flakes & coconut milk
- rice, quinoa & oatmeal
- almond butter
From these ingredients, I can make pretty much anything. What are the ingredients you always have on hand?
